William Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount from 1813 until his death in 1850, and called it his 'most beloved' home, and is now the family home of his direct descendants. Once visited by such famous literary names as Keats, Sir Walter Scott, Tennyson and Ralph Waldo Emerson, it contains family portraits and other personal possessions of historic interest. The dining room, part of the old tudor cottage, with its original flagged floor and oak beams, contrasts pleasingly with the larger proportions of the drawing room and library, added in 1750. Also to be seen are the family bedrooms and Wordsworth's attic study which he used when he was Poet Laureate. Lake Windermere and the peaceful Rydal Water offer a beautiful backdrop to the gardens of Rydal Mount, landscaped by the poet. They consist of fell-side terraces, rare shrubs and, in season, the daffodils, bluebells and rhododendrons produce a spectacular display of colour.
