Dove Cottage and Wordsworth Museum

Dove Cottage was William Wordsworth's home from 1799-1808. Visitors are offered guided tours of the Cottage. The garden 'a little nook of mountain ground', is open when the weather permits. The award winning museum displays the Wordsworth Trust's unique collection of manuscripts, books and paintings interpreting the life and work of Wordsworth, his family and circle. There is a major special exhibition every year. The Wordsworth Trust was founded in 1891, to secure Dove Cottage 'for the internal possession of all those who love English Poetry all over the world'. Today, visitors experience the tranquility of a site of outstanding beauty. As well as Dove Cottage - home to Wordsworth when he wrote his greatest poetry - the Wordsworth Museum tells the fascinating story of the poet and his circle, their life and their work. The Trust draws upon its unique collection of manuscripts, books and paintings relating to Wordsworth, the Lake District and the great age of British Romanticism to create an annual programme. In addition, the Trust has responsibility for preserving the hamlet that surrounds Dove Cottage ? a conservation area ? thus ensuring that visitors from all over the world can take away a sense of how it would have been in Wordsworth's day.
